“Free” does a lot of work in this category. Some of these apps are free the way a library is free. Some are free the way a test drive is free. Both are legitimate, but you should know which one you are downloading before you spend an evening setting it up.
So: six apps that give you something real without paying, sorted by how free they actually are. Disclosure first — Composure is ours, it is on the list, and it is one of the ones with a paywall. We have put exactly where that paywall sits in the table, because a page about free apps that hides its own pricing has no business being trusted about anyone else’s.
What each one gives you for nothing
| App | Free | Paid | Platforms |
|---|---|---|---|
| AIMS for Anger Management | Everything — full course, anger plan, tracking | Nothing | iOS, Android |
| NoAngry | The whole app — offline anger log, no account | Nothing | iOS, Android |
| Composure | De-escalation tools, reaction logging, feelings tools | 8-week programs, full insights | iOS, Android |
| MindShift CBT | Everything — CBT tools built for anxiety | Nothing | iOS, Android |
| Insight Timer | A very large meditation library | Courses, offline downloads | iOS, Android |
| Smiling Mind | Everything — mindfulness programs | Nothing | iOS, Android |
1. AIMS — the only fully free, purpose-built anger app
AIMS (Anger and Irritability Management Skills) was built by the US Department of Veterans Affairs, based on the anger protocol used in veteran care, and it is free to anyone who downloads it. No subscription, no upsell, no account. You get a structured self-help course, a personal anger plan, and tracking tools.
It looks like government software, because it is, and the experience is dated next to anything commercial. If you want one app that costs nothing and was built specifically for anger by people who treat it clinically, this is the answer and it is not close.
2. NoAngry — free, offline, no account
The minimalist option: a free anger log that works offline, with no sign-up and your data staying on the phone. If your blocker is distrust of wellness apps, or you just want the lightest possible way to start noticing your anger, it removes every excuse.
The trade-off is that logging is most of what it does. It will show you what happened; it will not coach you through the moment or give you a program to change the pattern once you have seen it.
3. Composure — free where it matters most, paid for depth
Composure (ours) is free to download, and the part you need at 6pm on a bad Tuesday is in the free tier: guided de-escalation that walks you through paced breathing and grounding for the ~90 seconds where anger peaks, plus reaction logging so you start building the record of what actually sets you off.
What costs money: the 8-week anger and anxiety programs, all the daily practices, and the full insights dashboard that cross-references your reactions against sleep, stress and screen time. Weekly or annual, or a one-time lifetime purchase. Billing runs through the App Store or Google Play, so cancelling is two taps and never an email to us.
If your problem is the moment, the free tier is genuinely usable indefinitely. If your problem is the pattern, the paid part is where that work lives, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
4. MindShift CBT — free, if anxiety travels with your anger
MindShift CBT comes from Anxiety Canada, a non-profit, and it is free in full. It is built for anxiety rather than anger, but the two share most of their machinery — thought records, coping cards, exposure-style steps — and a lot of chronic irritability turns out to be anxiety wearing a different coat. Worth trying if the description above sounds familiar.
5. Insight Timer — the biggest genuinely useful free tier
Not an anger app, but the free tier is unusually generous: tens of thousands of guided meditations and breathing tracks at no cost, including a good number specifically on anger and frustration. As a free way to build the daily calm habit that lowers your baseline reactivity, nothing else offers as much for nothing. It will not help you in the moment a reaction spikes, and it does not track anything.
6. Smiling Mind — free mindfulness from a non-profit
An Australian non-profit, entirely free, with structured mindfulness programs including ones designed for families and workplaces. Same caveat as Insight Timer — it is a general calm tool rather than an anger tool — but it is a real program rather than a library, which suits people who want an order to follow.
How to pick a free one that you will actually use
Match it to your failure mode rather than the feature list. If you escalate before you can think, you need in-the-moment tools. If you genuinely do not know what sets you off, you need a log — start with the free tier of anything that makes logging fast, and read how to track anger so you record the right five things. If you want to understand the mechanics, AIMS gives you a full course for nothing.
And one honest note about the whole category: an app is a delivery mechanism, not a treatment. If your anger is affecting your work, your relationships or anyone’s safety — or a court or employer requires a program — the right tool is a professional or a certified class, with an app alongside it.
